La Roux - Bulletproof

Equal parts flour, butter and ammo.

I dare you to not dance when listening to La Roux’s “Bulletproof.” It’s not possible. This song is a syringe full of adrenaline plunged straight through your sternum and into your heart. Which will get into the 160 bpms as you flail about to its hypnotic rhythms. I know people don’t say something “slaps” anymore, but this song does. Right across your face.

Listen, I’m probably reading too much into this, but the way the beat kicks, almost feels like the song is dancing. Is that dumb? Maybe. But it has this shuffle and the electro-clash explodes all around it. This ba-ba-beh-deh-baa-baa. It’s like the song is telling you how to dance.

It’s also a great song to dance to after a breakup, I imagine (I was and am still happily married since this song came out). You can just imagine an evening after being dumped where your friends take you out and get you drunk. This song comes on and you are compelled to aggressively dance your sad out. “This time, baby, I’ll be bulletproooooooooooooof,” you’ll sing at full volume, and while the song is playing, you’ll believe it. That feeling comes and goes, of course, the sad comes back for awhile. But La Roux is always there to sweep you off your feet, and make you feel invincible once more.
