"Come Alive" - Phantogram
Schrödinger's track.
I both do and do not get why Phantogram isn’t bigger. On one hand, they produce bombastic tracks full of energy and life that are immensely fun and easy to sing and dance along to. On the other hand, despite the remarkable highs their songs achieve, there always seems to be something missing. That criticism is a bit of a cheat because I can’t tell you what was missing. It’s not like the music is soulless, or crassly grabbing at fame, or the duo doesn’t have talent. But there is something… not there.
“Come Alive” is a perfect example. I’ve been listening to this song a ton since it came out last month. It’s a great, moody, mid-tempo track with a fantastic chorus. John Wick could walk in slow motion through a crowded club to this song. You know, before he then shoots everyone. There’s a lot to love here.
At the same time, I can see why your mileage may vary with this song. Again, not for any particular reason. There’s nothing wrong. I can’t point to something they should have done differently. But despite all this, I know this song isn’t going to be bigger. And I do and do not understand this.
