"the BLACK seminole" - Lil Yachty

Ceci n'est pas une pink floyd.

Let’s not bury the lead, Lil Yachty’s “the BLACK seminole” is a straight up Pink Floyd song. Dark Side of the Moon Pink Floyd, not Momentary Lapse of Reason Pink Floyd. I’m not the first person to say this, nor the last, especially because you’ll say it when you click play. The doodley synths rolls, the sludgy drums, and the guitars in particular. It’s a psych-rock vibe. And there’s nothing wrong with that at all.

I first encountered Lil Yachty watching Teen Titans Go to the Movies with my son years ago. (BTW, if you grew up reading comics, Teen Titans Go is a rad cartoon to watch with your kids.) Yachty’s “Teen Titans Rap” from that movie was pretty straightforward, and actually pretty good considering songs titled “_________ Rap” usually suck. All that is to say, I was surprised when my son played “the BLACK seminole” for me in the car. “This is basically a Pink Floyd song,” I said. “I know,” he said, because, of course, what do I know.

I enjoy “the BLACK seminole” because it was so unexpected and such a great Pink Floyd facsimile. Yachty really nails it. I can’t tell you whether it’s a good song in the world of rap, and if we’re being honest, I’m not the person to tell you how good a rap song is or isn’t (Ed. note: quit using the word “rap” so much). Pitchfork seemed bored by the psych pivot in their review, but they hate everything. Like it or hate it, you’ve got to admire its commitment. And I hope the move made Yachty plenty of MONEY (it’s a gas, grab that cash with both hands and make a stash).
