(The first 90 seconds of) "Angry Eyes" - Loggins and Messina
Too much noodling.
This is what happens when you don’t have an editor. The first minute and a half of Loggins and Messina’s “Angry Eyes” is fantastic, early 70s singer/songwriter rawk. Unimpeachable groove with a dash of funk. For 90 seconds you feel like you might be listening to the greatest song ever. But then the song goes on for another six minutes and ten seconds. Oh, and that additional six minutes and ten seconds are all instrumental.
Listen, your mileage may vary with a bunch of bass guitar and horn noodling in the background for more than an interminable five minutes. If that’s your jam — you’ll love all of this song. I’m not a big “Jazz Odyssey”-type guy. Gimme three and a half to four minutes, verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus-type stuff. At the risk of being obvious, it almost makes me angry that “Angry Eyes” exists. If only because of what I want it to be.
Maybe I’m being too harsh. But I’m only being that way because I love the first part of this song so much. It’s such a wonderful throwback to a different era that still holds up and no one makes anymore. It’s a blend of rock, pop, AM radio, country, and funk. It’s like that joke about the black box on an airplane — why not make the whole song out of that first 90 seconds. That would make me… happy.
