"U and Me" - Junior Senior

Commercialized.

Where are you at with pop songs you like in commercials? Like Natalie Imbruglia, I’m torn. On the one hand — good for the artist making that cash where they can, given the abysmal state of the music industry. On the other hand, it’s a bummer when a song you love so much is suddenly the soundtrack to a thirty second spot shilling anti-itch cream during the fourth quarter of Thursday Night Football. On the other other hand, I’m the guy who only discovered Nick Drake when “Pink Moon” was used in a VW commercial. So I’m not sure I have much of a leg to stand on here.

I don’t really watch much commercial TV anymore (brag), so when I heard Junior Senior’s “Move Your Feet” in a Hyundai commercial last night, I was kinda shocked. For one, that song is from 2002, so the producers went way back (in modern terms, anyway). Second, Junior Senior were never that big, and I had totally forgotten about them and that song, so was glad to hear it again. “Move Your Feet” is no “Pink Moon” when it comes to forming a deep emotional connection. It’s a Danish dance pop confection and a whole lottta fun. So good for them, making money off something they did almost a quarter century ago.

But that spot got me thinking about Junior Senior, who actually made a ton of commercial grade songs. The funny thing about Junior Senior is that when you hear songs like “Shake Your Coconuts” and “Go Junior, Go Senior” — there is simplicity to them that makes you think well heck, I could do that. But you would be wrong, my friend. Under the veneer of simplicity is enough complexity and musicality to fill the spacious cargo area of the 2025 Hyundai Tucson. I’ve only got two sentences left, so I’ll just say listen to “U and Me” right now because it’s a fun party song for the weekend. Don’t wait till it gets used in a commercial.
